IN THE MIDDLE OF
THE THRESHING FLOOR
In the middle of the threshing floor
with straws on my bare feet
eight years old looking at the sky;
tripping the stars,
looking at them, counting them
loosing count, starting all over again
Ι thought if I stretched my hand
in my palms
eternal light; I could hold them litt,
to share, to give
to you who is me and I do not know it;
to the next person who is the other
without knowing it
But the years have gone by; the stars
perpetually moving
nailed always in their place
have become so distant;
they fade behind hazy clouds
and buildings surpassing
the human measure
Today children are not familiar
with the straws
nor do they look at the sky
And you; have become a star on a distant dome

ΚΑΤΑΜΕΣΗΣ ΤΟΥ ΑΛΩΝΙΟΥ
Καταμεσής του αλωνιού
με τ' άχυρα στα πόδια τα γυμνά
οκταετής τον ουρανό κοιτούσα·
στ' αστέρια έβαζα τρικλοποδιά,
να τα κοιτώ να τα μετρώ
κι όλο τα έχανα, και φτου απ' την αρχή
πίστευα πως το χέρι αν άπλωνα
μες στις παλάμες μου
φως παντοτινό· θα τα κρατούσα αναμμένα,
να μοίραζα να έδινα
σε σένα που είμαι εγώ και δεν το ξέρω·
στον διπλανό που είναι ο άλλος
χωρίς να το γνωρίζει
Μα παρήλθον οι χρόνοι· τ΄ αστέρια
κινούμενα αενάως
καρφωμένα πάντα στη θέση τους
φαντάζουν μακρινά·
σβήνουν πίσω από σύννεφα θολά
και κτίρια που ξεπερνούν·
το μέτρο του ανθρώπου
Σήμερα τα παιδιά τ' άχυρα δεν γνωρίζουν
ούτε τον ουρανό κοιτούν
Κι εσύ· αστέρι έγινες σε θόλο μακρινό

bear shapes and
patterns of ages
So plain they unwittingly
stress our insignificance

Τα βότσαλα στην παραλία
της Καταλυκής
απλά και διόλου περίτεχνα
φέρουν σχήματα και
σχέδια αιώνων
Τόσο απλά που άγνωρα τους
τονίζουν την ασημαντότητα μας
The Poet
Yannis Stefanakis was born in Grigoria of Herakleion, Crete. He studied at the Athens School of Fine Arts. He has presented his work in many solo and group exhibitions in Greece and abroad. He has receive many awards. He publishes the magazine for literature and visual arts "Neo Epipedo" as well as the collectible magazine "Technopaignion".He also publishes collectible handmade poetry editions of important Greek poets. Four of his own poetry collections have been published. His work can be found in public and private collections in Greece and abroad.

Ο Γιάννης Στεφανάκις Γεννήθηκε στο Ηράκλειο Κρήτης το 1951. Σπούδασε στην Ανώτατη Σχολή Καλών Τεχνών της Αθήνας. Έχει κάνει πολλές εκθέσεις στην Ελλάδα και στο εξωτερικό και έχει βραβευτεί. Εκδίδει το περιοδικό για το λόγο και τα εικαστικά, Νέο Επίπεδο, και το συλλεκτικό Τεχνοπάιγνιον. Εκδίδει επίσης συλλεκτικά χειροποίητα βιβλία με ποίηση σπουδαίων Ελλήνων ποιητών. Έχει εκδώσει τέσσερις ποιητικές συλλογές και πολλά από τα εικαστικά του έργα βρίσκονται σε Μουσεία, Πινακοθήκες και σε πολλές ιδιωτικές συλλογές στην Ελλάδα και στο εξωτερικό.
