Patras World Poetry Festival

We would like to inform you that due to the implementation of a new lockdown in our country and the increase in the number of coronavirus cases, the organizing and scientific committee of the “Jean Moréas International Awards” and the Patras International Poetry Festival postpones the date of the event on December, 10-13 of 2020.

Digital Event

The Patras World Poetry Festival 2020 this year is entitled "National Poets" and plans to host 60 poets from 15 different countries around the world.

This year the festival be held online and virtually, as far as COVID-19 impact affects significantly the implementation of this event.

In the four-day online event there will be 6 meetings lasting up to 3 hours, where the guest poets will be presented with readings in 2 languages, via live connection. The events will be attended by invited representatives of institutions and the jury, while the program will include speeches, presentations, tributes, music, etc.

In addition, the following activities will take place within the schedule of the Festival events:

online Award of the annual Greek Poetry Awards "Jean Moréas" (Saturday December 12th)
Art Exhibition "National Poets" with the participation of 20 Greek artists and 10 artists from different countries (live and digital tour)
Collectible trilingual edition of the poems of the participants, in the first language of each artist, in Greek and English

The 3rd Patras World Poetry Festival 2020 is organized by the Poetry Fountation “Grafeion Poiiseos”, the literary website Culture Book (culturebook.gr) and the multicultural center Epikentro Plus History & Arts, while every year it is under the auspices of the Ministries of Culture and the Ministry of Tourism*. Supporters of the event are the Greek Library of London, the Cultural Center “Kostis Palamas”, the University of Western Macedonia, the Hellenic Open University and many other important institutions, as claimed under the Aegis of the President of the Hellenic Republic.

Awarding of Poetry Awards "Jean Moréas" for the year 2019

This annual event will be held digitally at one session of the PWPF Poetry Event 2020, with a presentation of the award-winning poets and recitations by them. This is the annual event during which the "Jean Moréas" Prizes are awarded for Greek poetic art and Greek poetic production in its entire range. They are recognizable nationwide and concern the poetry collections that were published throughout the previous calendar year from the year of the award. They refer both to young poets and newcomers and to those who are recognized with their poetic work along time.

The event is highly appreciated by the Greek literary and artistic circle of readers. In this year's event, in addition to the institutionalized awards, a very important foreign poet will be honored, who with his/her lifelong work honors the literature outside Greece.The Award Committee is composed of Greek University professors, as well as very important poets and poetry critics who will evaluate the work of the honorees.

Ιt's a single art, mother

It's a single art
to wash off the smell of words with chlorine
to make with them blissful moments
to always keep the weaver's broom adorned with the yellow which
Winter never succeeded in persuading you to yield
to raise the dogs of your village
to paint pictures out of hide-and-seek
to heal stigmata on the shanks
to arbitrate in the face of all authority divesting tenderness
to protect me from glances vulgar of those who think me vulgar
to liven up our home with that sweet smell of dogwood
to make an onion smell of spring
to admit me dark-skinned and tired from another land
to domesticate the stories of confinement
to knead us all together under your wings

Είναι μια τέχνη
να ξεπλένεις τη μυρουδιά από τα λόγια στη χλωρίνη
να φτιάχνεις μαζί τους ευτυχισμένες στιγμές
να έχεις πάντοτε στολισμένα σπάρτα με το κίτρινο
που δεν κατάφερε ποτέ ο Χειμώνας να σε πείσει να του χαρίσεις
να μεγαλώνεις τα σκυλιά του χωριού σου
να φτιάχνεις εικόνες από κρυφτό
να γιατρεύεις τα στίγματα στις γάμπες
να αυθαιρετείς απέναντι σε κάθε εξουσία εκποίησης της τρυφερότητας
να με προστατεύεις από ματιές πρόστυχες αυτών που με θεωρούν πρόστυχο
να ζωντανεύεις το σπίτι με εκείνη τη γλυκιά μυρωδιά του κράνου
να κάνεις να μυρίζει το κρεμμύδι άνοιξη
να με δέχεσαι μελαχρινό και κουρασμένο από άλλη στεριά
να ημερώνεις τις ιστορίες του εγκλεισμού
να μας ζυμώνεις όλους μαζί κάτω απ' τα φτερά σου

Parts of our home coming off; they were known to us
Our age resembles a desolate greeting
The whole world comes together in front of us
A nightly festive peculiar meeting

In ivory ashtrays we hide
Our lyrics and Zorba the Greek
Dragon-fire rages inside
Smoke makes our handwriting reek

See the balconies next door all lit
Empty squares like a daughter who waves
Art too finds new corners to meet
These human, erroneous days

Πέφτουν κομμάτια απ' το σπίτι μας γνωστά
Η εποχή θυμίζει μαύρη καλημέρα
Και αδελφώνει μες στα μάτια μας μπροστά
Όλη η γη σε μια παράξενη βεγγέρα

Στο φιλντισένιο μας τασάκι
Κρυμμένοι στίχοι και ζορμπάδες
Φυσάνε μέσα του οι δράκοι
Κι οι καπνισμένες μας αράδες

Τώρα στα διπλανά μπαλκόνια έχει φως
Και οι πλατείες είναι άδειες θυγατέρες
Τώρα ανταμώνει και η τέχνη μας αλλιώς
Στις λανθασμένες τις ανθρώπινες τις μέρες

The Poet

Triantafyllos H. Kotopoulos is a Professor of Creative Writing & Modern Greek Literature. He is in charge as the Director and Scientist Co-ordinator of Postgraduate Programs in Creative Writing. He has published eight (8) scientific books.. More than one hundred fifty (150) of his articles have been included in collective volumes, Greek and foreign scientific journals in addition to International Conference proceedings. He has co-ordinated four (4) International "Creative Writing" Conferences, he has edited a number of books and collective volumes and other than that he has participated in various research projects. He is the Director of the "Bibliology" Laboratory of the Faculty of Education at the University of Western Macedonia. He is a member of several cultural institutions and international companies, the Scientist Co-ordinator of the "Patras World Poetry Festival" and of the "Culture Book" website, as well. He presides over the selection panel of the literary prizes "Jean Moréas" and supervises the publication of the online magazine LexiTanil. He writes regularly in newspapers and journals of the printed and electronic press. Nevertheless, he wholeheartedly favors over his founding membership in the Pan-hellenic Association of Paraplegics cultural group- Northern Greece Location. Τhere are six (6) poetic collections in his track record: Portolanos (Paratiritis 1999), Edwards and Alfredos (Mandragoras 2012), Semicolons and such things (Mandragoras 2013), Buoys (Digamma 2015), The 40, aforetime, Churches (Mandragoras 2020) and one (1) collection of short stories: A novelette in 11 Long and short stories (Graphomichani 2015). He has written the lyrics (and his poems have been set to music) in the Clear Writing and in The hidden CDs (Metronomos 2016 and 2020), 4χ4 (Pikramenos 2021). He has organized, scientifically edited and presented two (2) television broadcasts about the art of writing: i. "Digamma" on ERT3 (2016-2017, 18 episodes) and ii. "Clear Writing" on ERT2 (2019, 12 episodes).

Ο Κωτόπουλος Η. Τριαντάφυλλος είναι Καθηγητής «Δημιουργικής Γραφής και Νεοελληνικής Λογοτεχνίας» (ΠΔΜ), Διευθυντής και Επιστημονικά Υπεύθυνος Μεταπτυχιακών Προγραμμάτων Σπουδών «Δημιουργικής Γραφής». Έχει εκδώσει οκτώ (8) επιστημονικά συγγράμματα και συγγράψει περισσότερα από εκατόν πενήντα(150) άρθρα σε συλλογικούς τόμους, ελληνικά και ξένα επιστημονικά περιοδικά και πρακτικά διεθνών συνεδρίων. Έχει διοργανώσει τέσσερα (4) διεθνή συνέδρια «Δημιουργικής Γραφής». Διευθύνει το Εργαστήριο Αγωγής για το βιβλίο και τον πολιτισμό «Βιβλιολογείον» του Πανεπιστημίου Δυτικής Μακεδονίας. Είναι ο επόπτης της συγγραφής των Νέων Προγραμμάτων Σπουδών του μαθήματος της Λογοτεχνίας στο Λύκειο (2020) και της σχετικής επιμόρφωσης των εκπαιδευτικών ΠΕ02. Είναι μέλος πολιτιστικών φορέων και διεθνών εταιρειών, επιστημονικός υπεύθυνος του «Patras World Poetry Festival» και της ιστοσελίδας «Culture Book», πρόεδρος της επιτροπής βραβείων ποίησης «Jean Moréas», υπεύθυνος για την έκδοση του ηλεκτρονικού περιοδικού ΛΕΞΗtanil, ενώ αρθρογραφεί συστηματικά σε εφημερίδες. Προκρίνει όμως, ανεπιφύλακτα, όλων τη συμμετοχή του ως ιδρυτικό μέλος στην πολιτιστική ομάδα του Πανελληνίου Συλλόγου Παραπληγικών – παράρτημα βόρειας Ελλάδας. Στο ενεργητικό του συμπεριλαμβάνονται έξι (6) ποιητικές συλλογές: Πορτολάνος (Παρατηρητής 1999), Εδουάρδοι και Αλφρέδοι (Μανδραγόρας 2012), Άνω τελείες και τέτοια (Μανδραγόρας 2013), Σημαδούρες (Δίγαμμα 2015), Οι 40, παλιές, Εκκλησιές (Μανδραγόρας 2020), 4Χ4 (Πικραμένος 2021) και μία (1) συλλογή διηγημάτων: Μία νουβέλα σε 11 Μικρές και μεγάλες ιστορίες (Γραφομηχανή 2015). Έχει συγγράψει τους στίχους (και έχουν μελοποιηθεί ποιήματά του) στα cd Γραφή Καθαρή (Μετρονόμος 2016) και Τα Κρυμμένα (Μετρονόμος 2020). Έχει οργανώσει, επιμεληθεί επιστημονικά και παρουσιάσει δύο (2) τηλεοπτικές εκπομπές για την τέχνη της συγγραφής: i. «Δίγαμμα» στην ΕΡΤ3 (2016-2017, 18 επεισόδια) και ii. «Γραφή Καθαρή» στην ΕΡΤ2 (2019, 12 επεισόδια).
