We would like to inform you that due to the implementation of a new lockdown in our country and the increase in the number of coronavirus cases, the organizing and scientific committee of the “Jean Moréas International Awards” and the Patras International Poetry Festival postpones the date of the event on December, 10-13 of 2020.

Digital Event

The Patras World Poetry Festival 2020 this year is entitled "National Poets" and plans to host 60 poets from 15 different countries around the world.

This year the festival  be held online and virtually, as far as COVID-19 impact affects significantly the implementation of this event.

In the four-day online event there will be 6 meetings lasting up to 3 hours, where the guest poets will be presented with readings in 2 languages, via live connection. The events will be attended by invited representatives of institutions and the jury, while the program will include speeches, presentations, tributes, music, etc.

In addition, the following activities will take place within the schedule of the Festival events:

  • online Award of the annual Greek Poetry Awards "Jean Moréas" (Saturday December 12th)

The 3rd Patras World Poetry Festival 2020 is organized by the Poetry Fountation “Grafeion Poiiseos”, the literary website Culture Book (culturebook.gr) and the multicultural center Epikentro Plus History & Arts, while every year it is under the auspices of the Ministries of Culture and the Ministry of Tourism*. Supporters of the event are the Greek Library of London, the Cultural Center “Kostis Palamas”, the University of Western Macedonia, the Hellenic Open University and many other important institutions, as claimed under the Aegis of the President of the Hellenic Republic.

Awarding of Poetry Awards "Jean Moréas" for the year 2019

This annual event will be held digitally at one session of the PWPF Poetry Event 2020, with a presentation of the award-winning poets and recitations by them. This is the annual event during which the "Jean Moréas" Prizes are awarded for Greek poetic art and Greek poetic production in its entire range. They are recognizable nationwide and concern the poetry collections that were published throughout the previous calendar year from the year of the award. They refer both to young poets and newcomers and to those who are recognized with their poetic work along time.

The event is highly appreciated by the Greek literary and artistic circle of readers. In this year's event, in addition to the institutionalized awards, a very important foreign poet will be honored, who with his/her lifelong work honors the literature outside Greece. The Award Committee is composed of Greek University professors, as well as very important poets and poetry critics who will evaluate the work of the honorees.

Sincerely,

On behalf of the organizing committee.

Kotopoulos H. Triantafyllos, President of the “Patras World Poetry Festival”

Skiathas D. Antonis, President of the Poetry Fountation “Grafeion Poiiseos”

The Poems

The Language of Birds

There is nothing else but this flock of birds flying
Only this silk thread exists between the birds
There are neither birds nor sky
Neither beats of wings nor the onlooker
Only this thread
This invisible chord which is visible
Which twangs and in twanging quivers
And makes sounds while twanging
And the sequence of these sounds engenders music
O music! The music of the stillness
Of moving simultaneously
The music on this chord
Is the only one that exists
Which is
And is alive.

A madarak nyelve

Nincsen más, csak a szálldosó madárcsoport.
Csak a madarak közötti selyemszál létezik.
Nincsenek sem madarak, sem ég,
Sem szárnycsapás, sem szemlélődő;
Hanem csak ez a fonál,
Ez a láthatatlan látható húr,
Amely peng, és e pengés során rezeg,
És e rezgés során hangokat ad,
És e hangok egymásutánja zenét nemz.
Ó, zenét! Az egyszerre mozdulás
Mozdulatlanságának zenéjét.
Ez a zene, ezen a húron,
Az egyetlen, mely létezik,
Amely van,
Él.

Aleppo

Like two hundred thousand for that two hundred thousand
I thought as I was gazing at overfed bodies
I heard greasy words as my sorrow swam
past the oily ghosts that grow on top of plastic heaps
of garbage quaking like artificial seraphs
there's no rejoice for me anymore
as long as that two hundred thousand are buried
in sand and flames -two hundred thousand it is indeed
you may cover your face with your palm but
you will have to see that the war is still on
with local frontlines going global
two hundred thousand - repeat it, grind it between your teeth
then order a drink, consume more, enjoy your holiday
be overjoyed, practice the culture of happiness
and watch and see that all seven billion of us is that very two hundred thousand
and there is no single one of us
who would dare write or say
that we all dwell in Aleppo.
then an angel came to me carrying a visciuos rose in his unfolding lips
in his words crown of thorns azure grace aurae that shielded me
like a memory or magic to unveil
as the animal roars from humans in their dreams
smelling blood longing for meet - burning sacrifice not being enough
and you know there's no mercy at this point
only the lucky ones are buried by their loved ones
but most of them have to share one common hole
that is only covered by lack of compassion.
two hundred thousand? - I ask the angel above
seven billion. - says the sparkling turquoise glimpse
humans - I start begging
souls. - put my life out.
what we used to have is gone
and from now on it will be even harder
get up, walk, live and remember:
it is not just that two hundred thousand
and not just seven billion
but you as well, who suffer.

Aleppó

Mert kétszázezer. Azért a kétszázezerért,
vért szagol, húst akar, szomját nem oltja égő áldozat;
Emberek. - fogom könyörgőre.
Lelkek. - semmisít meg.
Ami eddig volt nincs többé
és innentől még az eddiginél is nehezebb.
Kelj fel, járkálj csak, élj és emlékezz:
nem csak azzal a kétszázezerrel
és nem csak a hétmilliárddal
történik mindez, hanem veled.
