Apocryphal biography of Borges

for María Esther Vázquez

Mother
take pity on Borges
the lovestricken. Watch over him
so he won't slip. Your child is bound
to the worst kind of blindness,
that which allows you to see the light
from the other side, from every
side.

Light that couldn't be suspected
and even worse
touched by words.

Help him overcome
his dark fears
which we inherit through the blood and
those others,
more private and frightening,
hiding inside the pages
of books.

Mother
console him for his toil,
for his imprudent intention
to give up on being Borges, he
in whose embrace
no woman beloved ever fainted.

Announce to him
that the poet's brick and mortar are
degradation and agony.
The unavoidable faith
of a lamentable destiny.

Remind him
that he will know glory. Around him
will rise a universe, a world
beautified by his algebra and his fire,
a city beloved and hated.

A city
where millions of beings
will take the elevator or the subway
with the certainty however
that they've lost their destination.

A city
wherein exists the singular woman. The only.
And she does not love him.

Luz que no pudieron sospechar
y peor
tocar las palabras.

Ayúdalo a vencer
los oscuros temores τ
que heredamos en la sangre y

más profundos y terribles,
que se esconden entre las páginas
de los libros.

Madre
consuélalo por la fatiga,
por el insensato propósito
de renunciar a ser Borges, aquel
en cuyos brazos
jamás desfalleció la mujer amada.

que los materiales de un poeta
son la humillación y la angustia.
La convicción inexorable
de un destino desdichado.

Recuérdale
que conocerá la gloria. A su alrededor
se levantará un universo, un mundo
embellecido por su álgebra y por su fuego,
una ciudad
querida y detestada.

Una ciudad
donde millones de seres
tomarán el ascensor o el subterráneo
pero con la certeza
de haber perdido su destino.

Una ciudad
donde existe la única mujer. La única.
Y ella no lo ama.

Απόκρυφη βιογραφία του Μπόρχες

στη María Esther Vázquez

Μητέρα
λυπήσου τον Μπόρχες
τον ερωτευμένο. Πρόσεξέ τον
να μην γλιστρήσει. Το τέκνο σου είναι δέσμιο
της χειρότερης τυφλότητας,
εκείνης που σου επιτρέπει να βλέπεις το φως
από την άλλη πλευρά, από κάθε
πλευρά.

Φως που δεν μπόρεσαν να υποψιαστούν
και ακόμα χειρότερα
ν' αγγίξουνε οι λέξεις.

Βοήθησέ τον να νικήσει
τους σκοτεινούς φόβους
που κληρονομούμε στο αίμα και
εκείνους τους άλλους,
τους πιο μύχιους και πιο τρομαχτικούς,
που κρύβονται ανάμεσα στις σελίδες
των βιβλίων.

Μητέρα
παρηγόρησέ τον για τον μόχθο του,
για την αλόγιστη πρόθεσή του
να παραιτηθεί από το να είναι ο Μπόρχες, εκείνος
στην αγκαλιά του οποίου
δεν λιγοθύμησε ποτέ γυναίκα αγαπημένη.

Ανάγγειλέ του
πως τα υλικά του ποιητή
είναι η ταπείνωση και η αγωνία.
Η αναπόφευκτη πίστη
ενός αξιοθρήνητου πεπρωμένου.

Υπενθύμισέ του
ότι θα γνωρίσει τη δόξα. Γύρω του
θα ανατείλει ένα σύμπαν, ένας κόσμος
εξωραϊσμένος από την άλγεβρά του και τη φωτιά του,
μία πόλη αγαπημένη και μισητή.

Μία πόλη
όπου εκατομμύρια όντα
θα πάρουν το ασανσέρ ή το μετρό
με τη βεβαιότητα όμως
πως έχασαν τον προορισμό τους.

Μία πόλη
όπου υπάρχει η μόνη γυναίκα. Η μοναδική.
Και εκείνη δεν τον αγαπά.

que desasosiega al intestino recto. Dios
de la fatiga que levantó al Duomo de Milán
para que en la niebla
se manifieste. Dios
del ingenuo
que se toma fotografías
arrimado a la torre de Eiffel. Dios,

del otro ingenuo
que se toma fotografías
arrimado a la brevedad de un ángel. Dios,

de la música y del silencio
pero también del verdugo
que afina su instrumento. Dios,
de lo vivo y de lo muerto

De los que deliran
olvidados
en la estantería atroz
de una morgue. Dios

que se nombra cuando se alcanza la cima de un orgasmo
pero también
cuando hay que reconocer lo querido
en el fondo de un cajón
o de un abismo. Dios,

de lo que nace y muere
y en el trayecto se corrompe. Dios

de mis padres y de mis hijos
venidos o no pero al fin hijos. Dios solitario,

Κύριε Θεέ του εντόμου,
της αμοιβάδας
που το ορθό αναταράζει. Θεέ
της κόπωσης που ανέγειρε τον Καθεδρικό του Μιλάνου
για να αποκαλυφθεί
μες στην ομίχλη. Θεέ
του αφελούς
που φωτογραφίζεται
με φόντο τον Πύργο του Άιφελ. Θεέ,

του άλλου αφελούς
που φωτογραφίζεται
με φόντο το εφήμερο ενός αγγέλου. Θεέ,

της μουσικής και της σιωπής,
αλλά και του δήμιου
που ακονίζει το όργανό του. Θεέ,
των ζωντανών και των νεκρών

εκείνων που παραληρούν
ξεχασμένοι
στο φριχτό ράφι
ενός νεκροτομείου. Θεέ

που επικαλείται κανείς όταν φθάνει στην κορύφωση ενός οργασμού
μα και όταν
πρέπει να αναγνωρίσει το αγαπημένο
στο βάθος ενός συρταριού
ή μιας αβύσσου. Θεέ,

αυτού που γεννιέται και πεθαίνει
και στην πορεία διαφθείρεται. Θεέ

των γονιών μου και των παιδιών μου, είτε έρθουν είτε όχι,
αλλά, σε κάθε περίπτωση παιδιών. Θεέ μοναχικέ,
συνάδελφε που μουτζουρώνεις στα τυφλά
ένα σκαρίφημα ατέρμονο κι επαίσχυντο. Θεέ
χωρίς Θεό για τη συγχώρεσή σου, χωρίς Κάποιον
για να σε διορθώσει.

Θεέ δίχως πρόνοια για Σένα τον ίδιο.
Θεέ εγκαταλελειμμένε, άθεε
