Awarding of Poetry Awards "Jean Moréas" for the year 2019

This annual event will be held digitally at one session of the PWPF Poetry Event 2020, with a presentation of the award-winning poets and recitations by them. This is the annual event during which the "Jean Moréas" Prizes are awarded for Greek poetic art and Greek poetic production in its entire range. They are recognizable nationwide and concern the poetry collections that were published throughout the previous calendar year from the year of the award. They refer both to young poets and newcomers and to those who are recognized with their poetic work along time.

The event is highly appreciated by the Greek literary and artistic circle of readers. In this year's event, in addition to the institutionalized awards, a very important foreign poet will be honored, who with his/her lifelong work honors the literature outside Greece. The Award Committee is composed of Greek University professors, as well as very important poets and poetry critics who will evaluate the work of the honorees.

The Poems

Adam and Eve still live
in a photograph at my parents' house.

Eva, as we know her, has very long hair
and her name is Maria,
while Adam, naked from the waist up,
a little shorter than she, embraces her.

It's been years since they've been standing there
in a meadow, right in the middle of the bedroom.
They say they're my parents,
but no one believes them.
Especially I who have by now learned to feed myself.

There's an air of inexplicable arrogance about them
While next to them their elderly faces lie

In the night sometimes, I think
I can still hear them arguing about politics,
about the dances and packed squares
the sun was green then, the grass, the decades,
a slap strikes during the fight -

and I feel like screaming:

To be the first human,
isn't a fall the most political act?

They've been standing there for years, Adam and Eve
as if everything wasn't just a photomontage.
As if paradise too hasn't always been
a small-town road,
engulfed in cement.

τι πιο πολιτικό από μια πτώση;

A block of flats flies, without wings. It's just up in the air.
I don't live there. My house lies on the opposite side. I stare at it.
Strangely I don't feel afraid. I'm not afraid of its shadow,
I only worry about the clothes on the drying rack.
They won't make it if they fall from this high. One morning I got
on a train to get to the train, to go somewhere – I can't remember where –
not that it matters. An old man overtook me holding a miracle by the hand.
No, it was a small child. He was taking the child for a walk,
so they could count together how many times life comes and goes by,
how many people don't sleep at night, yet wake up in the morning
with a grey pigeon on their breast. Not I. The others. The others
with a grey pigeon. It is I.

Όχι εγώ.
