This is the annual event during which the "Jean Moréas" Prizes are awarded for Greek poetic art and Greek poetic production in its entire range. They are recognizable nationwide and concern the poetry collections that were published throughout the previous calendar year from the year of the award. They refer both to young poets and newcomers and to those who are recognized with their poetic work along time.

The event is highly appreciated by the Greek literary and artistic circle of readers. In this year's event, in addition to the institutionalized awards, a very important foreign poet will be honored, who with his/her lifelong work honors the literature outside Greece. The Award Committee is composed of Greek University professors, as well as very important poets and poetry critics who will evaluate the work of the honorees.

The Poems

Itineraries, 2

The gene of death is dozing under these dunes of cereals
of awns, along itineraries of coleopters
through a sky almost without history.
I can perceive this sorrow kneaded with tiredness
with aboulia fed by the fire of renunciation full
of small polychromatic theatres down in the slums next to the pride
of a raped woman
wrapped in desperate ropes and without any wish
rich in aching residues, babydolls and childish dreams.
And there is man and man, woman and woman
who are germinating among the latrines of this infernal circle
on desiccated mountains like on profane altars
to cut off their vital organs and blend in
with the lacerated sun and become sap
for metal roots
whirling along yellowed slopes and dead grass.

(Palermo 1980, Itineraries, trad. Roberta Piazza)

Itineraries 2

avvolta nelle corde disperate e senza desiderio
ricca di residui doloranti, babydolls e sogni puerili.
E c'è uomo e uomo, donna e donna

(Palermo 1980, Itineraries, trad. Roberta Piazza)

The wolf's in Milan

The wolf's scarlet pupil laps my fright;
it wanders in coffee cups, through the cruel
                                                   [round the Cathedral.
in the silence, filled with sour yeast, it torments the city
in a dullness soaked in autumn leaves, in barks.
Now, the beast bleeds along leaden spires, Gothic
though hidden, he smells my wounds, shirt, my soul.
His eye seems to have become my own; from his
                                                                  [mortal fire
the uncertain glance of my father, not in his thirties yet:
both of us in a thick rain of ash, voices, flashes, stones,
birds' feathers.

(Palermo, in the night of 18° June 2010; The wolf's in Milan, trad. Eleonora Chiavetta)

Il lupo di Milano

La scarlatta pupilla del lupo lambisce la mia paura;
Ora la bestia sanguina per guglie livide, per gotiche lame;

(Palermo, notte del 18 giugno 2010; The wolf's in Milan, trad. Eleonora Chiavetta))
