The Poems
Two poems for Famagusta*
* Famagusta is my homeland. In August 14th 1974, a Turkish illegal military attack, turned Famagusta into a ghost city. Despite two UN Security Council resolutions, Turkey continues to occupy Famagusta and refuses to give it back to its legal inhabitants. In November 2020, Erdogan provocatively opened some streets of our city for tourists and he also went there for a picnic, showing everybody who he really is. I will never forget Famagusta and I will always give it my voice.
OMEN
Even if you go back
to take pictures and whisper prayers
at least focus on the omens.
An empty chair
say in Famagusta
sitting there waiting
for the next one.

Κι αν επιστρέφεις
για φωτογραφίες και προσευχές
eστίαζε τουλάχιστον στους οιωνούς.
Μια άδεια καρέκλα
ας πούμε στην Αμμόχωστο
που κάθεται και περιμένει
τον επόμενο.

To forget you
I lie down in your sand
and gather photons.
Then I drench them
with devotion to my skin.
Tiny stars sprout within me
and then I ascend
zero charged
omnibus and full moon elsewhere.
But I do not forget you

ΑΜΜΟΧΩΣΤΟΣ
Για να σε λησμονήσω
ξαπλώνω στην άμμο σου
και μαζεύω φωτόνια.
Ύστερα τα αλείβω
με ευλάβεια στο δέρμα μου.
Μικροσκοπικά αστέρια
φυτρώνουν εντός μου
και τότε ανατέλλω
μηδενικά φορτισμένη
πανδέκτης και πανσέληνος αλλού.
Μα δε σε λησμονώ.
The Poet
Angela Kaimaklioti was born in 1967 in Famagusta. She holds a degree in pedagogy and a master’s degree in educational leadership and politics. She also has postgraduate studies in crisis management and mediation. She is a director of primary schools, president of the Larnaca Cultural Association and a member of the board of the Foundation for Culture for Children and Young People. She was vice-president of the Cyprus Writers’ Union. She has published five books of poetry and a book of short stories. Her poems have been included in poetry anthologies and literary magazines. Her poetry book “At close quarters” has been translated into Serbian and English.

Η Αγγέλα Καϊμακλιώτη γεννήθηκε το 1967 στην Αμμόχωστο . Είναι κάτοχος πτυχίου παιδαγωγικών και μεταπτυχιακού τίτλου στην εκπαιδευτική ηγεσία και πολιτική. Έχει επίσης μεταπτυχιακές σπουδές σε θέματα διαχείρισης κρίσεων και διαμεσολάβησης. Είναι διευθύντρια σχολείων Δημοτικής Εκπαίδευσης, πρόεδρος της Πολιτιστικής Ένωσης Λάρνακας και μέλος του διοικητικού συμβουλίου του Ιδρύματος Πολιτισμού για παιδιά και νέους. Διετέλεσε αντιπρόεδρος της Ένωσης Λογοτεχνών Κύπρου. Έχει εκδώσει πέντε ποιητικές συλλογές και μια συλλογή διηγημάτων. Έργα της έχουν περιληφθεί σε ανθολογίες ποίησης και λογοτεχνικά περιοδικά. Η ποιητική της συλλογή «Εκ του Σύνεγγυς» έχει μεταφραστεί στα σερβικά και στα αγγλικά.
