The Poems

A MOMENT

A passenger sitting on the rear seat
of the bus with the proper wrinkle of thought
behind the glass looking at me. I’m looking at him
slantwise from Alexandroupolis to Sparta
and from Heraklion to Lixouri, I’m looking at him
he is still looking at me with that lateral gaze
performed by those who have a past not in order
and a future accomplished; he isa fossilized

hero of a slantwise declined remembrance

(Translation bυ Joseph S. Josephides)

A CLOUD OF TOBACCO SMOKE

Before the visit comes to an end
Let the scholastic chronographer record
The cloud of tobacco smoke that wrapped the room
Its extent and its various tints:
How was it above the lampshade,
How did itshow up in front of the mirror,
How did it expand with slight shifts
And it became a compact mass displacing
The previous debate, and so nowtriumphantly
Everyone has to deal with that cloud,
A subject that closes nicely a gathering,
Eliminating dissents and disputes,
At the very time when all stand upright
And shake hands,

And the host is eager to open up the window.
