PRESS RELEASE

5h “Patras World Poetry Festival”

“From Hippocrates to poetry therapy”

1 – 4/09/2022 PATRAS – ANCIENT OLYMPIA

Along with many other important international participations and a rich event programme, this year, the 5th “Patras World Poetry Festival” is going to be held between the 1 and 4 of September, in different cultural locations of Patras and not only.

After two years of online realization of the Festival, Patras is again glad to receive in person 65 important poets from 13 different countries, 20 among them, being poets from abroad. This year’s programme has in store many surprises for the participants and for the audience, with visits and poetry recitations in particular places and in alternative ways.

The subject area of PWPF2022 concerns the healing properties of art and especially of poetry and it is entitled “From Hippocrates to poetry therapy”, so the complete action programme was planned with the purpose of creating a back – to - back interaction of arts, poetry and psychology.

The events are going to take place in the mornings and in the evenings in different locations of Patras every time, such as the Epikentro Theatre, the Foundation of Hellenic Diaspora, Achaia Clauss Winery  and the Villa of Kolla, while the last recitation is going to take place in Ancient Olympia through an all – day excursion of experiential character. The programme includes further guided tours, food and wine tasting and activities of cultural tourism, in order for the visitors to obtain the best possible experience from our land!

Ιmportant guests participate at the events, among them ambassadors of collaborating countries, internationally renowned academics, belletrists and representatives of entities.

Special moments of the Festival are the tribute to the poet Titos Patrikios, the Round Table with the subject “Healing through Poetry”, the visit at the “Foundation of Hellenic Diaspora” with its art exhibitions from important emigrant Greek artists and the set to music poetry event, entitled “Like a Shiver...”, which is going to take place at the Honorable Evening of the Festival.

All the events are open for the audience with FREE entrance.

At the same time. The Festival converses with visual arts and hosts two visual and one photographical project.

  • Art Platform | Lagrange Points

In passing of the collaboration of the contemporary art gallery “Cube Gallery” and Liana Zoza as a curator, with Patras World Poetry Festival, the art platform “Lagrange Points” was created.

The idea came up simultaneously with the proposition for the presentation of the two on going art projects “Open Studio” and “Invisible cities”, during the Festival and under the common title “L3 point”, at the same time with the desire for the continuation of the creative meetings of all forms of art.

Even if the term is a loan from the mechanics of celestial bodies, which discusses the rules of equilibrium and affinity of their relationship and coexistence, it also works with the same equilibrium at the coexistence of different art forms.

  • Peny Delta poet portraits

During the Festival, the photographer Peny Delta is going to create the portraits of the participant at the Festival poets and poetesses, which are going to be used at the archive of the Poetry Office and in the related publishing of the Festival.

Statement of Antonis Skiathas (President of the Poetry Office)

The Patras World Poetry Festival has created an international institution of literature that honors Greek letters, promotes Greek poetry and brings in contact Greek poets and poetesses with related poets and poetesses from all over the world.

Along its way, poets and poetesses from fifty countries have conversed at the Patras World Poetry Festival.

It is extremely important for all of us at the Poetry Office that the Festival is a matter of the whole town, as panhellenic, regional, local, institutions, businesses, citizens stand for the organising by every means.

The Ministry of Culture, the Region of Western Greece and the University of Patras are some of the institutions that support it.

The publishing that is been organized and the events at emblematic locations of the wider area like Achaia Clauss, the museum Diaspora, form the Festival’s identity.

At the same time, the synergism with cultural institutions and the connection of Poetry with other arts like music, visual arts, photography create all things that make the Festival unique.

The Poems

HOW TO STAY FAITHFUL

Believe me, I am a faithful woman.

Faithful to my hairdresser,
even though on days
when she finds out her husband will return home
late from work
she sticks the comb into my scalp
as if it were a pitchfork.

Faithful to my butcher
who wraps each piece of meat
with a bawdy comment
hinting at carnal appetites
of a different kind.

Faithful to my man,
to the destructive dialectics of war and eros
at the battlefield of our intimicy,
which is slowly changing my heart
into a cadaver of a heart.

Believe me, I am a faithful woman.

Faithful to my multi-storied heart
with a different climate in each ventricle
because of which
it sometimes can't speak for itself.
Faithful to its depths and heights
although they are a scary place.

Faithful to my tribe, to my clan –
what and how and when and where
they expressed themselves –
it also goes through me.
I co-breathe with them,
even though it is them with their nonchalant familiarity –
(after all blood is thicker than water) –
who dig their fingers deepest into my aching spots
never completely satisfied
with the intensity of my pain.

Faithful to my children,
to my nestlings,
to whom I offer the regurgitated world
placing it into their hungry open beaks
so that one day
they will take from it themselves:
golden grains, red worms or carcasses.

Faithful to my truth,
although I took its innocence long ago –
we are far too close
but what is too close,
concerns us no more.

Believe me, I am a faithful woman.

Yet how can I stay faithful
when real life constantly
perverts my words, images and deeds?
How do I balance
what I know with who I am?
When I am complete during the day,
but disintegrate into elementary particles at night,
sometimes insure
if I can even vouch for myself?

Believe me,
I am a faithful woman.
And a faithful woman must always fight
with all forms of fidelity and infidelity
so she can stay faithful
to her image of a faithful woman.

διαστρεβλώνει λέξεις, εικόνες, πράξεις;
αυτό που ξέρω με αυτό που είμαι;
για τον εαυτό μου;

Kako ostati zvesta

uničujoči dialektiki vojne in erosa

Zvesta njegovim globinam in višinam,
čeprav so strašen kraj.

Zvesta svojemu plemenu, rodu –
kaj in kako in kdaj in kje so se izrekli,
je šlo tudi skozi mene,
z njimi sodiham naprej,
čeprav mi prav oni
s prostodušno zaupnostjo krvi,
ki ni voda,
prste zadirajo najgloblje v boleča mesta
in niso nikoli popolnoma zadovoljni
z jakostjo bolečine,
ki jo ob tem čutim.

Zvesta svojim otrokom,

Zvesta svoji resnici,
čeprav sem ji že zdavnaj vzela nedolžnost,
in sva si preblizu,
in kar nam je preveč blizu,
nas ne zadeva več.

Lahko mi verjamete, zvesta ženska sem.

A kako ostati zvesta,
ko neizprosna resničnost
sproti izkrivlja besede, podobe, dejanja?
Ko skušam uskladiti
tisto, kar vem, s tem, kar sem?
Ko sem čez dan cela,
noč pa me razkroji v osnovne delce,
zato včasih ne vem,
ali sploh lahko jamčim sama zase?

Lahko mi verjamete,
zvesta ženska sem.
In zvesta ženska se mora ves čas spopadati
z vsemi oblikami zvestobe in nezvestobe,
da lahko ostane zvesta
svoji podobi
zveste ženske.

AMPHIBIANS

We're like amphibians; sometimes outside, on dry land,
sometimes submerged in our own internal swamps.

We feel safe in our muddy swamps.
We thrive in them.

We are sensitive to touch, noli me tangere;
and to words and glances, noli me legere, noli me videre.

Our blood is sometimes hot, sometimes ice cold, sometimes watered down.
We have membranes behind our eyelids, and an extra pair of lids,

so we can close our eyes tight, vertically and horizontally.
We make love without looking into each other's eyes,

we hump each other from behind, so we can seize,
reshape and fantasize our desires and visions.

Afterwards we leave, go on our way, because the one
that attacks us this way sooner or later begins to reek of sadness,

and that is unbearable, it cannot be endured.
We're like amphibians; headless caecilian antagonism.

και σε λέξεις και σε ματιές, noli me legere, noli me videre.

Dvoživljenje

Nekakšne dvoživke smo; včasih zunaj, na kopnem,
včasih potopljeni v svoja notranja močvirja.

V blatu svojih močvirij smo varni, v njem prav lepo uspevamo.
In občutljivi smo na dotike, noli me tangere;

na besede in poglede, noli me legere, noli me videre.

zapremo vertikalno in horizontalno neprepustno.

zasegli, preoblikovali, sfantazirali svoje želje in vizije,
