You would certainly have seen
the snuff from my cigarette
behind lowered awnings
among lovely ornamental plants
glowing at four in the morning
having again stayed up all night
in constant drizzle, a bottle of ouzo
and infinite cigarettes, something
certainly hasn't escaped your eyes,
a mere footnote in the text
of your own night,
a reminder and reference
to all the countless losses;
one who's lost all he had to lose
lost in the end even his sleep too.
Την καύτρα απ' το τσιγάρο μου
θα την είδατε βέβαια,
πίσω από κατεβασμένες τέντες
ανάμεσα σε καλλωπιστικά φυτά
να φέγγει την τετάρτη πρωινή
αφού ξενύχτησα και πάλι απόψε,
με ψιλοβρόχι, μαυρογιαννάκη
και τσιγάρα άπειρα, κάτι
δεν μπορεί θα πήρε το μάτι σας,
απλή υποσημείωση στο κείμενο
της δικιάς σας νύχτας,
υπενθύμιση κι αναγωγή
σε όλες τις αναρίθμητες απώλειες,
ένας που έχασε ό,τι είχε να χάσει
έχασε στο τέλος και τον ύπνο του.

A man with his dog
at the pier of Nafplion
one Spring Sunday
doesn't remember at all if he's ever loved,
if he's been loved, if he was ever tied
with vows and kisses
to beauty, like the dog
on his chain, and he goes on:
women are forgiven in life,
men after death.
Ένας άντρας με το σκύλο του
στην αποβάθρα του Ναυπλίου,
Άνοιξη Κυριακή
δεν θυμάται καν αν αγάπησε,
αν τον αγάπησαν, αν είχε δεθεί
με όρκους και φιλιά
στα κάλλη, σαν το σκυλί
στην αλυσίδα του, και προχωράει:
οι γυναίκες συγχωρούνται εν ζωή,
οι άντρες μετά θάνατον.

The Poet
Sotirios Pastakas (Larissa, 1954), poet. He studied Medicine in Rome and Psychiatry in Athens. He has published 17 poetry collections. It has been translated into 17 languages and has taken part in international poetry festivals (San Francisco, Sarajevo, Izmir, Rome, Naples, Siena, Cairo, Istanbul, Medellin). Three poetry collections (Corpo a corpo, Jorge, Monte Egaleo) are published in Italy, where he won the NordSud Prize in 2016, one in the USA (Food Line), and one in Spain (Cuerpo a cuerpo). In 2019 he donated his library to the Municipal Library of Rapsani. He is a member since 1994 of the Greek Writers' Society and National Coordinator of the World Poetry Movement (WPM) for Greece.

Σωτήρης Παστάκας (Λάρισα, 1954), ποιητής. Σπούδασε Ιατρική στη Ρώμη και Ψυχιατρική στην Αθήνα. Έχει εκδώσει 17 ποιητικές συλλογές. Έχει μεταφραστεί σε 17 γλώσσες και έχει λάβει μέρος σε διεθνή φεστιβάλ ποίησης (Σαν Φρανσίσκο, Σαράγιεβο, Σμύρνη, Ρώμη, Νάπολη, Σιένα, Κάιρο, Κωνσταντινούπολη, Μεδεγίν). Τρεις ποιητικές συλλογές (Corpo a corpo, Jorge, Monte Egaleo) κυκλοφορούν στην Ιταλία, όπου απέσπασε το Βραβείο NordSud το 2016, μία στις ΗΠΑ (Food Line), και μία στην Ισπανία (Cuerpo a cuerpo). Το 2019 δώρισε τη βιβλιοθήκη του στη Δημοτική Βιβλιοθήκη Ραψάνης. Είναι μέλος της Εταιρείας Συγγραφέων από το 1994, κι εθνικός συντονιστής στο Παγκόσμιο Ποιητικό Κίνημα (WPM) για την Ελλάδα.
