IT' IS NOT YOU
It's not habit – that sly milestone
of death-. Neither is it
going to weddings alone or
escaping
some foreign
bedroom on Sundays; even less so is it
making
dinner for two and dining alone.
It's not even
the lonely wait at the dentist's,
the width of the bed or this fear
that you'll never love again – and that
suffices-.
For it's not the farewell,
neither is it life without you, nor your
memory;
but to know that the woman I was
when I loved you, exists no more.

ΔΕΝ ΕΙΣΑΙ ΕΣΥ
Δεν είναι η συνήθεια – αυτό το ύπουλο
ορόσημο του θανάτου-. Ούτε το να
πηγαίνεις στους γάμους μόνη ή να
δραπετεύεις από μια ξένη κάμαρα τις
Κυριακές∙
ακόμα λιγότερο το να ετοιμάζεις δείπνο για
δύο και να τρως μονάχη.
Δεν είναι ούτε καν
η μοναχική αναμονή στον οδοντίατρο,
το πλάτος του κρεβατιού ή αυτός ο φόβος
ότι δεν θα ξαναγαπήσεις – κι αυτό είναι ήδη αρκετό-.
ούτε η ζωή δίχως εσένα, ούτε η θύμησή
σου∙
αλλά το να ξέρεις ότι η γυναίκα που ήμουν
όταν σ' αγαπούσα δεν υπάρχει πια.
No es la costumbre —ese taimado hito
de la muerte—. Tampoco
ir a las bodas sola o escapar
de un dormitorio ajeno los domingos;
menos aún hacer
la cena para dos y cenar uno.
No es ni siquiera
la espera solitaria en el dentista,
el ancho de la cama o este miedo
a no volver a amar —y ya es bastante—.
Porque no es el adiós,
ni la vida sin ti, ni tu recuerdo;
sino saber perdida
a esa mujer que fui cuando te amaba.
At the train station of my city
a grey partition meter-and-a-half long
stands on the platform between passengers
their
companions.
I like to think that the person responsible for this
segregation
designed it with intentions more human,
than control,
maximizing resources
or simply making room:
here farewells cannot be whispered
with one's face hidden inside the other's embrace;
the architecture bligates
you to raise your voice and gaze
to say "I'm going to miss you".
Blessed – -damned one responsible
for this grey partition a meter- and- a- half long,
thanks to you I looked in the eyes of love for one last time.
Στον σταθμό των τρένων της πόλης μου
ένα γκρι χώρισμα ενάμισι μέτρου στην
Μου αρέσει να φαντάζομαι ότι ο υπεύθυνος
αγαθές προθέσεις από τον έλεγχο των
εδώ, κανείς δεν μπορεί να ψιθυρίσει
η αρχιτεκτονική επιβάλλει
να υψώνει κανείς τη φωνή και το βλέμμα
για να πει «θα μου λείψεις».
Ευλογημένε – καταραμένε υπεύθυνε
αυτού του γκρι χωρίσματος ενάμισι μέτρου,
En la estación de trenes de mi ciudad
una mampara gris de metro y medio en el andén
separa a los viajeros
de sus acompañantes.
Me gusta imaginar que el encargado
de esta compartimentalización
lo hizo con intenciones más humanas
que el control de billetes, el aprovechamiento
máximo de recursos
o simplemente por ahorrar espacio:
aquí las despedidas no pueden susurrarse
con la cara escondida en el abrazo,
la arquitectura obliga
a levantar la voz y la mirada
para decir «te voy a echar de menos».
Bendito-condenado responsable
de esa mampara gris de metro y medio,
gracias a ti miré a los ojos del amor
una última vez.

Rocío Acebal Doval (Oviedo, 1997) is a graduate of Law and Political Science from Universidad Carlos III de Madrid.. She is the author of Memorias del mar
(Valparaíso, 2016) and Hijos de la bonanza (Hiperión, 2020), which was awarded with the XXXV Premio Hiperión de Poesía.
