The Poems
TINDUF ROSES
We are the root that resists
below the sand,
tangled in phosphate,
impossible to tear from the ground, even if they take everything.
We are keeping multiplying everywhere
I say here we bloom
and an invisible thread, like steel,
unites us.
We sing the same secret song
in hassania
We march
innocent, wise and strong
towards the light.
I say I am, I was, and I will be
(and a rose is a rose
no matter how small it is
even if they seem to have thorns left over
and they would find it floating,
weightless
in the water of a river of gold)
*
ROSAS DE TINDUF
Somos la raíz que resiste
debajo de la arena,
enredada en el fosfato,
imposible de arrancar, aún si se lo llevan todo.
Hemos seguido multiplicándonos
dondequiera.
Digo que aquí florecemos
y un hilo invisible, como de acero,
nos une.
Cantamos la misma canción secreta
en hassanía
marchamos
inocentes y sabias y fuertes
hacia la luz.
Digo que soy, que fui, y que seré
( y una rosa es una rosa
por menuda que sea
así parezcan sobrarle espinas
y la encuentren flotando, leve,
en el agua de un río de oro)
* * *
A doll that floats alone in the sea
A doll that floats alone in the sea
is an easy metaphor of death
Bones falling down again and again
to the bottom.
Girls' heavy bones
Girls who couldn't hold the doll anymore
*
