HOW CAN YOU LOVE A POEM
to Vangelis Tasiopoulos

How can you love a poem
when the deepest meaning
of poetry
is neither useful
nor fancy
and among those written
no poem
was ever really necessary
for survival.
How can you touch
an infant poem
when each word doubles
as secret burial ground
where the dead
and the living engage
like two trains
running in opposite directions
then cross
for a moment
as the trees around them
come to a standstill.
How can you look
at a child poem
when it sobs with fright
in the war
or grows dim,
a starveling child
paper-thin,
as you grab
a frozen beer from the fridge
or a shiny pack of potato chips
engulfed
in the warm flow
of your private time?
How can you smell
a black dough poem
when every Chauvin
crushes the neck of Floyd
(right in front of you)
with a hammering knee
even as you walk among the crowd
alone
and horizontal
like a still air bubble
within a common spirit level?
How can you kiss
a poem on the lips
in the midst of Covid-19
before first spraying disinfectant
on each and every line
(haven't I said this somewhere before?)
and if you're not convinced
that a poet's mouth
is not just a verdant pasture
but also a dangerous place?
How can we truly love
a poem
when the air pressure
in the head
does not rhyme
with the gale blowing
outside
over the visible skin of life
and perhaps this is why
we are all
kind to the dead
as we turn our eyes
upon everything

including monstrous nothingness.

ΠΩΣ Ν' ΑΓΑΠΗΣΕΙΣ ΕΝΑ ΠΟΙΗΜΑ

Πώς ν' αγαπήσεις ένα ποίημα
αφού το βαθύτερο νόημα
της ποίησης
δεν είναι χρήσιμο
ή μαγικό
ούτε κανένα ποίημα
που γράφτηκε ποτέ
είναι στ' αλήθεια απαραίτητο
για να επιβιώσεις;
Πώς ν' ακουμπήσεις
ένα βρέφος ποίημα
αφού η κάθε λέξη λειτουργεί
σαν μυστικός τόπος ταφής
όπου νεκροί
και ζωντανοί συνομιλούν
σαν δύο τρένα
που κινούνται αντίθετα
αλλά διασταυρώνονται
για μια στιγμή
καθώς τα γύρω δέντρα
στέκονται ακύμαντα;
Πώς να κοιτάξεις
ένα ποίημα παιδί
όταν δακρύζει τρομαγμένο
μες στον πόλεμο
ή τσαλακώνεται απ' την πείνα
σαν χαρτί
καθώς τσιμπάς
μια παγωμένη μπίρα απ' το ψυγείο
ή μια γυαλιστερή συσκευασία τσιπς
εγκλωβισμένος
μέσα στη ζεστή ροή
του ιδιωτικού σου χρόνου;
Πώς να μυρίσεις
ένα μαύρο ποίημα ψωμί
όταν ο κάθε Τσόβιν
συνθλίβει τον λαιμό του Φλόιντ
(ακριβώς μπροστά σου)
μ' ένα γόνατο σφυρί
καθώς κινείσαι μες στο πλήθος
μόνος
κι οριζόντιος
σαν φυσαλίδα αδιάφορη
σ' ένα κοινό αλφάδι;
Πώς να φιλήσεις
ένα ποίημα στα σείλη
εν μέσω covid-19
αν δεν ψεκάσεις πρώτα
κάθε στίχο με οινόπνευμα
(κάπου το έχω ξαναπεί αυτό)
κι αν δεν πεισθείς
ότι το στόμα κάθε ποιητή
δεν είναι μόνο τόπος χλοερός
αλλά και τόπος επικίνδυνος;
Πώς ν' αγαπήσουμε στ' αλήθεια
ένα ποίημα
όταν η πίεση του αέρα
στο κεφάλι
δεν ομοιοκαταληκτεί
με τον αέρα που φυσάει
έξω απ' αυτό
στην ορατή επιδερμίδα της ζωής
κι ίσως γι' αυτό
είμαστε όλοι
στοργικοί με τους νεκρούς
καθώς
κοιτάζουμε τα πάντα

και το θηριώδες τίποτα.

OUT OF CONTEXT


I'm sitting at a table only half a man
sipping my red wine.
Behind the counter,
a mirror
and a frame of shadows.
Sunwards
a tree
amidst the passing crowd
gestures randomly
out of context.
Then I saw you--or did I?
The day had gone down as far as your shoulders
and you were putting your hair up
standing tall
within the street's
precarious reality.

As I was drawing conclusions
you bent like a wheat stalk
then rushed away
closed and woollen,
coatless
across time.

ΕΚΤΟΣ ΚΕΙΜΕΝΟΥ

Κάθομαι σ' ένα τραπέζι μισός
και πίνω το κόκκινο κρασί μου.
Πίσω απ' τον πάγκο
ένας καθρέφτης
κι ένα κάδρο με σκιές.
Απ' τη μεριά του ήλιου
ένα δέντρο
μες στο πλήθος που περνά
χειρονομεί αυθαίρετα
εκτός κειμένου.
Και τότε σ' είδα ή μου φάνηκε;
Η μέρα σού 'φτανε ώς τον ώμο
κι έπιανες κότσο τα μαλλιά
ορθή
μες στην επισφαλή πραγματικότητα
του δρόμου.
Καθώς κατέληγα σε συμπεράσματα
γέρνεις σαν στάχυ
κι ύστερα φεύγεις βιαστικά
κλειστή και μάλλινη
χωρίς μπουφάν

The Poet

Panayiotis Nikolaides (Nicosia 1974) is a poet and literary critic and works as a philologist in secondary education. He has published the poetry collections Mirror like an Iamb (Planodion, Athens 2009, State Prize for a New Writer), I emigrate with a vowel (Planodion, Athens 2012), Oinopoiesis, 66 haikus on wine and poetry (self-publication, Nicosia, 2014), Paralogē (Gutenberg, Athens 2016), One on the white and two on the black. Sonata about abstraction (Thraka, Athens 2017, with Michalis Papadopoulos), and finally the poetic collection The bride of July (Smili, Athens 2020). His last composite poem The bride of July was awarded the "Jean Moreas" prize for the best poetic collection of 2019 in Greece and selected in the short list of Greek National Prizes of the same year. He has also published the studies In contemplation and in dream: Thoughts on two poems and two essays by Theodosis Nikolaou (Aktis, Cyprus 2016), Elena Toumazi Rebelina. Introduction to her work (Diorama, Cyprus 2020), as well as the collection of critiques The Generation of the Occupation. 14 critiques on the contemporary poetry of Cyprus after '90 (Diorama, Cyprus 2018). Finally he participated as an editor, with George Christodoulides in the Anthology of Cypriot Poetry 1960-2018 (Kyma, Athens 2018).

Νικολαΐδης Παναγιώτης: (Λευκωσία 1974). Είναι ποιητής, κριτικός και εργάζεται ως φιλόλογος στη Μέση Εκπαίδευση. Δημοσίευσε τις ποιητικές συλλογές Σαν ίαμβος καθρέφτης (Πλανόδιον 2009, Κρατικό Βραβείο Πρωτοεμφανιζόμενου Λογοτέχνη), Ξενιτεύομαι μ' ένα φωνήεν (Πλανόδιον 2012), Οινοποίηση, 66 χαϊκού για το κρασίν τζαι την ποίησην (ιδιωτική έκδοση, Λευκωσία 2014), Παραλογή (Gutenberg 2016), Μια στο λευκό και δυο στο μαύρο (Θράκα 2017, μαζί με τον Μιχάλη Παπαδόπουλο) και τέλος την ποιητική σύνθεση Η νύφη του Ιούλη (εκδόσεις Σμίλη 2019), βιβλίο το οποίο απέσπασε το πανελλήνιο βραβείο Jean Moreas για την καλύτερη ποιητική συλλογή του 2019 και μπήκε στη βραχεία λίστα των Κρατικών Βραβείων Ελλάδας του ίδιου έτους. Έχει εκδώσει επίσης τη μελέτη Με λογισμό και μ' όνειρο. Σκέψεις πάνω σε δύο ποιήματα και δύο δοκίμια του Θεοδόση Νικολάου, (Ακτίς, Κύπρος 2016), τη συναγωγή κριτικών κειμένωνΗ γενιά της κατοχής και της αφθονίας. 14 κριτικά κείμενα για τη σύγχρονη ποίηση στην Κύπρο μετά το ΄90 (Διόραμα, Κύπρος 2018), καθώς και τη μελέτη Έλενα Τουμαζή Ρεμπελίνα. Εισαγωγή στο έργο της (Διόραμα, Κύπρος 2020). Τέλος, μαζί με τον Γιώργο Χριστοδουλίδη εξέδωσαν την Ανθολογία Κυπριακής Ποίησης 1960-2018, εκδ. Κύμα, Αθήνα 2018.
