The suitcase
I carry my black suitcase with difficulty.
I can barely lift it off the floor.
I carry it on my shoulders uphill
I squeeze it under my armpits downhill
I drag it in the rainstorm.
The years that piled up,
time left,
made it too heavy to lift.
And yet
this black suitcase is the one of
the mahogany colour of emigration
the pink colour of moving home
the beige colour of wanderings
the ivory colour of excursions.
It is the same white suitcase
with the christening clothes and Jordan almonds.
Η βαλίτσα
Με κόπο κουβαλώ τη μαύρη μου βαλίτσα.
Όσο που την σηκώνω απ' το δάπεδο.
Την φορτώνομαι στους ώμους στις ανωφέρειες
την σφίγγω παραμάσχαλα στις κατωφέρειες
την σέρνω μες στις νεροποντές.
Τα χρόνια που στοιβάχτηκαν
ο χρόνος που περισσεύει
την έκαναν ασήκωτη.
Κι όμως
η μαύρη τούτη βαλίτσα είναι αυτή
η ακαζού βαλίτσα της μετανάστευσης
η σομόν των μετακομίσεων
η εκρού των περιπλανήσεων
η ιβουάρ των εκδρομών.
Είναι η ίδια λευκή βαλίτσα
με τα βαφτιστικά και τα κουφέτα.

That fraying on the hem
of your silky nightgown
that imperceptible thread
caressing my soles
while I was blissfully dreaming
had iron teeth.
Once it devoured
the linen sheets
the wooden bed
and the flickering candlelight
it then tore me apart as well.
Η κλωστή
Εκείνο το ξέφτι στο στρίφωμα
της μεταξένιας σου νυκτικιάς
εκείνη η αδιόρατη κλωστή
που μου χάιδευετα πέλματα
κιεγώ μακαρίως ονειρευόμουν
είχε σιδερένια δόντια.
Αφού κατέφαγε
τα λινά σεντόνια
την ξύλινη κλίνη
και το τρεμάμενο φως των κεριών
μετά κατασπάραξε κι εμένα.
The Poet
Kyriakos Anayiotos was born in Limassol, Cyprus in 1958. He is a graduate of Laniteio Lyceum. In 1986 he graduated at Aachen Polytechnic University in Germany, with a degree in Architecture. In the past eighteen years he is employed at the Technical Services Department of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sport and Youth. He has published three poem collections: "Like the rising wind", 2012 "Homeless and stonemason", 2015 "Hippostasio" (Livery stable), 2020

Ο Κυριάκος Αναγιωτός γεννήθηκε το 1958 στη Λεμεσό. Το 1976 απεφοίτησε από το Λανίτειο Γυμνάσιο Λεμεσού. Την περίοδο 1978-1986 σπούδασε στο Πολυτεχνείο του Άαχεν της Γερμανίας, από όπου πήρε το πτυχίο του Αρχιτέκτονα. Τα τελευταία δεκαοκτώ χρόνια εργάζεται στις Τεχνικές Υπηρεσίες του Υπουργείου Παιδείας, Πολιτισμού, Αθλητισμού και Νεολαίας. Έχει εκδώσει τις ακόλουθες τρεις ποιητικές συλλογές: "Ως άνεμος επακμάζων", 2012. "Ανέστιος και λιθοξόος", 2015. "Ιπποστάσιο", 2020.
