Correspondence under the light of the August Full Moon
For the war prisoners and missing Cypriots of
the turkish invasion and imprisonment of 1974
At first,
they crammed us into the hold˙
had the moon emerged that night
I don't know,
the barbed wire around us
artfully as it was placed
contained our every move along with
our fuzzy thinking˙
and then the pain in the entrails
let no trace of romance at all.
In hunger there's no room but for the hungry.
Besides what moon ever stood
the light to prolong
into a dark sight worse than the abyssal?
For centuries it's been the dawn's work
the size and the form of the monster to show.
of that August
three internment camps
Adana, Seray, Amasya
Coloured in blood.

στους αιχμαλώτους και αγνοούμενους Κυπρίους από
την τουρκική εισβολή και αιχμαλωσία του 1974
Στην αρχή
μας στρίμωξαν στο αμπάρι˙
φεγγάρι αν βγήκε τη νύχτα εκείνη
δεν γνωρίζω,
το συρματόπλεγμα γύρω μας
με τέχνη καθώς μπήκε
πέρα από κάθε κίνηση εμπόδιζε και
τη θολή μας σκέψη˙
κι έπειτα ο πόνος μες στα έντερα
ίχνος ρομαντισμού δεν άφηνε κανένα.
Στην πείνα μοναχά χωράει ο πεινασμένος.
Άλλωστε ποιο φεγγάρι στάθηκε
το φως να παρατείνει
σε θέαμα σκοτεινό χειρότερο της αβύσσου;
Αιώνες τώρα είν΄ έργο της αυγής
την έκταση και τη μορφή του τέρατος να δείχνει.
Μα αν με ρωτάτε για την πανσέληνο
εκείνου του Αυγούστου
τρεις τόποι κράτησης
Άδανα, Σεράι, Αμάσια
χρωμάτισαν με αίμα.

Today
She waters a tree in the yard.
Tomorrow
She gives birth to a son.
The son
might read a book under the tree's shade
or might
with his own shadows, forge the new firearms.
Today she waters a tree
Tomorrow she waters humanity with blood.

Ενδεχόμενα
Σήμερα
ποτίζει ένα δέντρο στην αυλή.
Αύριο
θα γεννήσει έναν γιο.
Ο γιος
ίσως διαβάσει κάτω απ' την σκιά του δέντρου
ή
ίσως πάλι με τις δικές του σκιές φτιάξει τα νέα όπλα.
Σήμερα ποτίζει ένα δέντρο
αύριο ίσως ποτίσει την ανθρωπότητα με αίμα.
The Poet
| Eleftheria Thanoglou was born in 1978, is from Olimpiada Halkidikis and lives in Thessaloniki. She is a member of the editorial team of the online magazine culturebook.gr and Grafeion Poiiseos. She has published 3 poetry collections: The five ages of red/2017, representation/2019, The Death of Birds/2021. Her poems and short stories have been published in collective editions, in print and electronic literary magazines.She has written theatrical monologues that were included in the musical performance Maria Polydouri ONLY WHY DID YOU LOVE ME by the composer Giorgos Diplas. Her poems have been translated in English, Italian, Spanish, Albanian and German. She is a member of the Writers Association of Thessaloniki. * Η Ελευθερία Θάνογλου γεννήθηκε το 1978, κατάγεται από την Ολυμπιάδα Χαλκιδικής και διαμένει στην Θεσσαλονίκη. Είναι μέλος της συντακτικής ομάδας του διαδικτυακού περιοδικού culturebook.gr και του Γραφείου Ποιήσεως. Έχει εκδώσει τις ποιητικές συλλογές. Οι πέντε εποχές του κόκκινου (εκδ. Πικραμένος, 2017), α ν α π α ρ ά σ τ α σ η (εκδ. Πικραμένος, 2019) και Ο θάνατος των πτηνών (εκδ. ΑΩ, 2021). Ποιήματά και διηγήματά της έχουν δημοσιευθεί σε συλλογικές εκδόσεις σε έντυπα και ηλεκτρονικά λογοτεχνικά περιοδικά. Θεατρικοί της μονόλογοι συμπεριλήφθηκαν στην μουσική παράσταση Μαρία Πολυδούρη ΜΟΝΟ ΓΙΑΤΙ Μ' ΑΓΑΠΗΣΕΣ του συνθέτη Γιώργου Δίπλα. Ποιήματά της έχουν μεταφραστεί στην αγγλική, την ιταλική, ισπανική, αλβανική και γερμανική γλώσσα. Είναι μέλος της Εταιρίας Λογοτεχνών Θεσσαλονίκης. |
